This place has been so dead lately, I'm just gonna blurt out the answer now- according to help from Miatadotnet, I believe the answer is a Lincoln Mark VII

I wouldn't have guessed that but the cover does have the notch in the trunk lid.

If you want to go through the effort of searching my thread over at M-net, someone posted a pic of one with a chrome bumper and the trunk lid up that was very convincing. Coupled with an e-mail to the photographer who identified it as a big American rental car, it sounded pretty right to me.

I'm going to disagree with that one. Couple problems....

The taillights are wrong. The ones in the picture are double stacked, while the ones on a MkVIII are single story.
The trunk opening is much to shallow... a MkVIII is much deeper front to rear.

Could it be a Ford Mustang?

Thought about that or a Mercury Capri, but the chrome bumper throws that off.

I'm still not quite sure about this one.

The Mercury Capri is a better guess. The bumper doesn't look chrome but shiny black and I think that was how that era of Capri's (terrible cars) came.
